This seminar focuses on the people and living practices in planned housing; both group and plotted developments of Delhi N.C.T. The planned housing is portrayed as one of the best residential options available, widely and unopposed, and on the other hand, the existence of slums and urban villages are questioned, though they may contain some positive side. Majority of the population aspire to live in these planned housing, but only 25% of Delhi’s population actually live in such developments. We all know for a fact that the resources on earth are not unlimited. In today’s scenario, resource management is an important issue. Hence, there is a need to question, whether these planned developments are smart enough.
The planned housing came into existence to solve the problems which arose out of unplanned developments and were considered smart when they were initiated. But, are they really smart? This can be established once the housing is in existence and operation for some time. The planned housing typologies in Delhi are classified under various categories. Subsequently, there are various aspects of living condition of people in these planned housing, for instance, water consumption, energy consumption, etc., which has been studied in the seminar. The findings upon analysation of the data, is quite contrary to what general perception of people is. For instance, in few planned developments, the resources are underutilised or over utilised, as compared to other types of housing like slums and urban villages. Thus, the practices of living by the people in planned housing which are wasteful must be condemned and eliminated. Also, the practices which efficiently use the available means and resources must be embraced and incorporated, as they ultimately are the smart practices of living. Smart resource management will lead to smart living and hence smarter planned settlements. |
